In 1903, two men created a thin wax
writing stick that could be produced
in multiple colors...and introduced the
world to CRAYOLA crayons.
That same year, inspired by President
Roosevelt's reported compassion for a
cornered bear while out on a hunting trip, a Brooklyn toy store drove in crowds of eager kids when they sold
the first Teddy Bears.
And from a small plateau in Kitty Hawk,
North Carolina, an entrepreneurial Orville Wright left the ground and stayed aloft for an entire 12 seconds in the world's first airplane.
1903 was also the year young
Thelma Barnes died.
